About the CHUM IBD Centre
As a multidisciplinary clinic, research and education hub, the CHUM IBD Centre serves close to 7,000 people in Quebec living with inflammatory bowel disease, a number that continues to grow.
The CHUM IBD Centre’s world-renowned team has created an optimal environment for people throughout Quebec to access premier treatments, guidance and support.
Our interdisciplinary IBD specialists include gastroenterologists, nurses, nutritionists and psychologists working alongside digestive surgeons, radiologists, rheumatologists, ophthalmologists, dermatologists, emergency physicians, internists and hepatologists. This comprehensive network addresses the multiple extra-digestive manifestations that frequently accompany IBD.
Clinical Care
The CHUM IBD Centre provides comprehensive, interdisciplinary care to thousands of IBD patients through a dedicated team of IBD doctors and nurses specializing in IBD. Thanks to a full-time nutritionist and psychologist, we are the only centre in Quebec offering free access to both clinical nutrition and psychological support for patients with IBD.
We are also the only centre in the province with a dedicated emergency IBD endoscopy room, accessible within the same week—a cornerstone of our strategy to divert patients from the emergency department and manage flares in an outpatient setting.
With 19 ongoing studies and multiple clinical trials, the CHUM IBD Centre offers access to cutting-edge therapies, including dual biologic treatment and advanced diagnostic tools for drug and inflammation monitoring not available elsewhere in Canada.
Our patients benefit from a broader team of IBD-focused surgeons, radiologists and pathologists also at Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal, reinforcing the depth and integration of care across disciplines.
Research
The CHUM IBD Centre’s research program advances inflammatory bowel disease care through a combination of clinical trials and investigator‑initiated studies. Led by Dr. Robert Battat, the team is committed to giving patients access to emerging therapies and innovative treatment approaches. At any given time, the team typically oversees at least six active clinical trials, ensuring that people living with all forms of IBD have meaningful options tailored to their needs.
Dr. Battat leads multiple active prospective studies as well as a broad portfolio of observational research. The team includes experienced research coordinators, research nurses, research assistants, medical residents, and both medical and master’s students, all working together to ensure the success and rigour of these initiatives. A major focus of the research is the development of diagnostic biomarkers to improve IBD diagnosis, enable non‑invasive disease monitoring and identify new therapeutic targets.
The CHUM IBD Centre is also a leader in knowledge translation and hosts the annual Quebec IBD Research Conference, which brings together clinicians, scientists and trainees from across the province (cqrm.ca).

Digital Health + AI
At the CHUM IBD Centre, innovation drives everything we do to improve care for people living with IBD. Led by Dr. Jeremy Liu, an expert in data analysis and management, we combine healthcare registries with artificial intelligence to uncover insights that enhance treatment outcomes and the patient experience.
By analyzing key performance indicators, patient trends, and clinical data in collaboration with data strategists and scientists, we stay at the forefront of IBD care—developing forward-thinking solutions that meet the evolving needs of patients and providers alike.
Education
Education is a core priority at the CHUM IBD Centre, led by Dr. Katarzyna Orlicka. We offer comprehensive training for medical students and residents, combining theoretical learning with hands-on clinical experience during outpatient and bedside rotations. Our program includes formal research training, with opportunities for four medical students and eight residents in internal medicine or gastroenterology to gain valuable research experience. Annually, we provide education for about 40 residents, enhancing their skills in gastroenterology through both didactic and experiential learning.
In addition to training future specialists, the CHUM IBD Centre is developing educational projects aimed at improving local care for patients with challenging IBD issues, reducing unnecessary travel to Montréal.
We are also focused on enhancing the knowledge of patients and healthcare providers to help prevent complications and avoid emergency room visits. This initiative is part of our broader commitment to improving IBD care across the region.
The CHUM IBD Centre is further recognized for our leadership in disseminating the most up‑to‑date medical knowledge in IBD. As part of this commitment, we host the annual MICI Masterclass at the CHUM, a province‑wide educational event designed to elevate clinical practice and strengthen the IBD community.

The CHUM IBD Centre team includes other gastroenterologists from the CHUM gastroenterology division who are actively involved in the care of patients with IBD. These specialists, who work alongside the Centre’s core team, see IBD patients and have full access to all services and resources offered by the Centre. This ensures continuity and consistency of care for all patients, regardless of which clinician they consult.
