Advancing IBD Care Through Education and Training
Education is a core part of the CHUM IBD Centre’s mission. Led by Dr. Katarzyna Orlicka, our education program combines theoretical learning, clinical training and research opportunities to prepare medical students, residents and the next generation of gastroenterology specialists.
Each year, approximately 40 residents receive gastroenterology training through didactic learning and hands-on clinical experience. Our formal research program also provides opportunities for medical students and residents in internal medicine and gastroenterology to gain practical research experience.
Beyond the CHUM, we develop educational initiatives for healthcare professionals and patients across Quebec. By strengthening IBD knowledge and expertise in local communities, we aim to improve care, reduce unnecessary travel to Montreal and help prevent complications and emergency department visits.
Education for Physicians
Our team helps train the next generation of gastroenterologists and internal medicine specialists, while providing continuing education for physicians with an interest in IBD. Key initiatives include:
- CHUM IBD Masterclass
- Meet the Expert – Virtual Series
- IBD advanced fellowship – University of Montréal
- Resident physician IBD rotation for gastroenterology and internal medicine residency programs
Our team also contributes as invited speakers at national and international IBD conferences, supporting continuing medical education and the exchange of expertise in IBD care.
Education for Nurses
We are developing educational initiatives specifically for nurses working in IBD care. Our team also contributes as invited speakers at major continuing education events for IBD-specialized nurses, including Nurses Initiative in IBD Care and Education (NIICE) and Requiem.
Our participation reflects our ongoing commitment to interdisciplinary education in IBD care.
Education for Patients
Our patient education initiatives create opportunities for people living with IBD to learn, ask questions and connect directly with healthcare professionals. Our first “I Talk About My IBD” dinner-discussion gave patients the opportunity to ask questions directly to members of the CHUM IBD Centre healthcare team.
Additional patient education initiatives are in development as we continue to expand resources and support for people living with IBD.

By sharing IBD knowledge and expertise, we’re helping patients and healthcare professionals improve care across Quebec.
